Cows, first and foremost.

An efficient cow herd is more formidable than any single bull purchased.

The first Santa Gertrudis bull was introduced to Spring Vale in 1965 and joined to Poll Hereford cows.  It was soon evident to us the many benefits of Santa Gertrudis genetics, with only Santa bulls purchased thereafter and a commercial Santa herd was established. This was the base of the Warenda Stud, registered in 1984. A small select number of cows were purchased plus a grading up program using the Spring Vale cows.

Many influencial sires were introduced to the stud over the years. Home bred bulls were also retained and A.I. programs were conducted.

Warenda stud commenced showing cattle in 1990 and met with success at regional shows, breed feature shows and Royal shows. Broad ribbons have been won at Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne with both heifers and cows and junior and senior bulls.

The selection of females is strict. Quality with breed character and neat udders, quiet temperament, fertility and doing ability are all required and strived for. Very few females are offered for sale, only a select heifer, occasionally.

Warenda Stud conducted an on property bull sale for 12 years, until 2009. Sales were successful with good clearances and loyal repeat buyers with bulls selling to studs. Warenda Sahara(P) held the Australian record of $80,000 for 8 years.

The stud herd was unfortunately reduced in 2009.  Warenda has been selling at the Santa Central Sale over the last 13 years with an auction bull average of $10,073 (as at 2022). Some of the top sellers:  Equator (P) $42,000, Equador (P) $32,000, Gallipoli (PS) $24,000, Halifax (P) $47,500,  Killamanjaro (P) $50,000, Labrador (P) $55,000, Nairobi (PS) $32,500, and Quilpie (PS)  $20,000.
